Welcome to Day 3! Today, we focus on balancing our digital media consumption with activities that positively stimulate our minds and contribute to our growth.
Understanding the Impact of Digital Media
Excessive use of digital media, particularly social media, can lead to increased feelings of distraction, restlessness, and even anxiety – issues that are particularly pronounced in individuals with ADHD. The goal is to replace some of this digital time with activities that are more enriching and beneficial for our brain.
Today’s Focus: Balancing and Replacing
The challenge for today is two-fold:
- Match the Time: For every minute spent on social media or aimless internet browsing, spend an equal amount of time on a quality, mind-enhancing activity.
- Stacking Tasks: Combine this with some of the tasks you’ve been putting off using the 5-4-3-2-1 or the 15-minute techniques.
Activity Suggestions
- Listen to a Podcast: Find a podcast that interests you (educational, self-improvement, ADHD-related) and listen while doing a simple task like organising a drawer or taking a walk.
- Read an Article or Book: Choose a book or an article on a topic that intrigues you. Read for the same amount of time that you’d typically scroll through social media.
- Watch an Educational YouTube Video: Replace some of your entertainment video time with educational content that broadens your knowledge or skills.
- Mind-Enhancing Games: Play a brain-training game or a puzzle instead of browsing social media.
- Creative Expression: Spend time drawing, writing, or engaging in a DIY project – creative activities are excellent for brain health.
- Cooking a New Recipe: Cooking requires focus and following instructions, making it a great activity to sharpen your mind. Listen to an audiobook or a podcast while you cook.
Reflective Journaling
- Digital vs Quality Time: Note down the time spent on digital media versus engaging in quality activities.
- Task Progress: Write about the tasks you combined with your quality time activities.
- Emotional and Cognitive Impact: Reflect on how you feel after balancing digital media with more stimulating activities. Did you notice a difference in your attention span, mood, or overall satisfaction?
Conclusion
Today was about conscious media consumption and investing in activities that enrich our minds. By replacing aimless scrolling with quality learning or creative activities, we’re not only decluttering our digital life but also enhancing our cognitive abilities. Keep this balance in mind as we move forward to Day 4, and remember, the goal is to create a lifestyle that supports your ADHD management effectively.
