Lessons Learned and Embracing Different Approaches
Imagine a cat with ADHD: curious, easily distracted, chasing every moving shadow or light beam, yet completely unbothered by its erratic behavior. While it’s a humorous thought, observing such carefree attitudes in animals can offer valuable insights into how we, as humans, deal with ADHD. Here’s what my cat taught me about living with ADHD.
The Bliss of Ignorance
My cat, with its endless energy and erratic focus, could easily be labeled as having ADHD in the human world. But the fascinating thing is, the cat doesn’t care. It lives life moment to moment, following whatever catches its attention, completely unconcerned with societal norms or productivity hacks. This attitude is a stark contrast to the self-consciousness many humans with ADHD experience, constantly aware of how different they might seem in a world that values consistency and focus.
Lessons in Self-Acceptance
Watching my cat has taught me the first and perhaps most crucial lesson: self-acceptance. Unlike my cat, I spent years battling against my ADHD tendencies, trying to fit into a mold that wasn’t made for me. But observing my cat’s unabashed behavior helps me realise the importance of embracing my unique way of interacting with the world.
Living in the Moment
ADHD often means getting easily swept up in the whirlwind of the present moment. This can be seen as a drawback, but there’s a flip side: a capacity for incredible enthusiasm and passion for current engagements. Living in the moment, fully and unapologetically, can be a powerful way to experience life.
The Need for Personalised Strategies
Just as my cat navigates the world in its own feline way, I’ve learned the importance of developing strategies that work for me. Standard time management and organisational methods don’t always align with the ADHD brain. Instead, embracing methods that cater to rapid shifts in attention and finding joy in sudden sparks of interest can be more effective, but realising that if something needs attending to then I need to shift my focus and deal with that.
Harnessing Spontaneous Energy
My cat’s spontaneous bursts of energy are not unlike the hyperfocus phases in ADHD, where concentration intensifies suddenly and unexpectedly. Learning to harness these bursts of energy, directing them towards productive tasks, can lead to remarkable achievements.
The Beauty of Divergent Thinking
ADHD often comes with a style of thinking that deviates from the norm – it’s nonlinear, creative, and incredibly fast. It’s like watching my cat leap and twist in the air. This kind of divergent thinking can lead to innovative solutions and ideas.
Adjusting Expectations
Living with ADHD means adjusting expectations. Just as my cat will never ponder over its erratic actions or learn to drive a car, I’ve learned to adjust my expectations of how I ‘should’ function. This involves embracing my unique pace, strengths and flaws and recognising that different doesn’t mean deficient, but should be used to help me create a life that suits my nature.
Conclusion
My cat, in all its ADHD-like glory, doesn’t spend a moment worrying about its scattered focus or sudden sprints across the room. It simply is as it is, delighting in its own nature. This, I’ve realised, is a lesson worth embracing. Living with ADHD requires doing things a differently, but within that difference lies the potential for extraordinary creativity, passion, and a uniquely vibrant way of experiencing the world. It’s about time we embrace our inner ‘ADHD cat’ – with all its quirks and unpredictabilities.
